Cranial Circumference

Hey everyone, 

I hope you're not getting big heads from the excellent exam scores you received during our slope unit. Now we're going to learn about circumference of a circle, and your noggin! The circumference of your head is used to determine your hat size according to the chart below. 

I want you all to determine your hat sizes and come to class prepared to solve this problem algebraically, after a little instruction of course.

Danger Ahead!

Hey Everyone,

When we talk about slope there are a lot of sports applications as well. One of those being in a ski jump. Consider the following: You're about to go down a ski jump, how steep is the slope? Will the slope affect your speed? How far will you jump?

In the Olympics it is literally a matter of life and death in the construction of a ski jump. If not enough room is left at the base of the jump, the skier could land in the crowd injuring themselves and others. It is a delicate balance to find a slope that will give the skiers enough speed to make a good jump, but not so much speed that they are in danger of loosing control!

What do you think the ideal slope for a ski ramp is? What other sports have ramps that we can apply this principle to? Bring your ideas to class discussion tomorrow!

Hey everyone,

In class we have been learning about the slope formula, and you might not think it applies in the real world. I assure you it does! In order to make all buildings handicap accessible handicap ramps are being installed all over the country. Consider the following regulations

You are a construction site manager. You want to make a ramp for a set of stairs that is 3 feet tall. What is the shortest distance you can make the ramp length, while still being safe? Bring in your answers to class, and be prepared to discuss your reasoning.

It's not magic, it's math!

Hi Everyone and welcome to the page! I hope that through this blog you all will begin to see that math isn't something that we just learn in the classroom. Math takes place in our everyday lives. I know math is hard for a lot of you, but math is a skill, a skill that we are going to work together to develop! Watch the video below to get a new perspective on math.
